Best Paint Colors for Your Home: TRUE BLUE
Welcome to the latest edition of Remodelaholic’s Color Files! We’re moving right around the color wheel. Last week, we took a look at whisper-soft shades of pale blue. This week, we’re taking a look at deeper shades of blue, those that are closer to what might be defined as “true blue”.
Color, of course, is very subjective. But the blues we’re singing about today are the ones that are the most saturated with blue pigment. It’s quite a departure from the soothing calm of baby blue hues that we looked at last week. True blues are vibrant and energizing. They are happy shades that are rarely ever moody. In the fashion and textile world, bright blues are headed to the top of the charts, this year (think Kate Middleton blue). These blues are intense enough that it’s practically a rule in home decor that they must be paired with lots of white. It takes some courage to put this much saturated color on the walls, but you can enjoy the effect in small doses, too. You’ll see that blue looks just as great on furniture and doors as it does on walls.
Let’s have a look, shall we?
Cook’s Blue by Farrow & Ball at House Beautiful
Twilight Blue by Benjamin Moore at Houzz
True Blue by Krylon Dual Paint at Dollar Store Crafts
Boca Raton Blue by Benjamin Moore by The Impatient Gardener
Scandinavian Blue by Benjamin Moore at Houzz
Refuge by Sherwin Williams at SoPo Cottage
Rich Navy by Glidden at The Inspired Room
Cobalt Blue Tile by Waterworks at Houzz
Blueblood by Sherwin Williams at The Lackadaisical Mom
Night Sky by Valspar’s Eddie Bauer Home at Houzz
Plumage by Martha Stewart at Young House Love
Naval by Sherwin Williams at Houzz
Loyal Blue by Sherwin Williams at Emily Henderson
So, what do you think? Is this a color that you want to try inside or outside your house? Or will you play it safe and limit this one to your fashion choices? If you could paint one thing bright blue, what would it be?
A color I am completely smitten with right now is Gentleman’s Gray by Benjamin Moore. It’s a deep, indigo blue that is just gorgeous. I originally fell in love with Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, but with no local access, and a steep price tag, Gentleman’s Gray was a very close second. Take a look!

Totally loving blues right now!
I like it! I’ve done an all blue room for our son – it’s a blueberry blue and I love, love, love it – there are so many colours to coordinate with it like orange, grey, lime green and red too!! Thanks for the inspiration, now I’m thinking I might need a blue front door… hmmm.
I already painted parts of my antique sideboard bright peacock teal blue, but ended up toning it down with dark wax to pacify the hubs. I am putting my foot down on the powder room though! Going to board-and-batten the walls (since it’s only a 3×7 room shouldn’t be too difficult!), and go with a rich, strong blue above. I can’t wait!
Absolutely I want to use blue everywhere! In fact, that’s my front door up there (the Christmassy-one, which has since been changed to BM’s Down Pour Blue).
Erin, did I link to the proper place? Would you like me to link to your blog?… okay just searched your blog and found it! YAY! I updated the link to your blog! Thanks for letting me know!
Thanks Cassity! That was really nice of you! I’m just happy to see my silly little door pop up every once in a while!
It is SUCH a beautiful door! I love it!
Beautiful color . . . great photos . . . fantastic post.
Love all the blues!!
Blue on the exterior of a classic home (like the one from younghouselove.com) is one of the most under-used looks out there. To me it provides a really relaxed, almost southern resort type atmosphere.
As a lover of all shades of blue this was truly a wonderful post. Thank you!
May the peace and joy of the season be yours.
Hi!!
First off, I’m In love with every picture!!
I need HELP!! We have a craftsman style house that we are reprinting from beige and blah to almost the same blue as the last picture (Naval by SH). I love that color! My question: what accent color do I use? We have a garage door, a small section of decorative shingles on the front of our house, and one set of shutters. I want to paint the front door a poppy red, but I’m just lost on everything else. I’m thinking of doing the shingles and garage door white? I need help!!!!!!
I don’t think I would do the shingles white(do they even have white?). But the garage door sounds great. I noticed on the house they have some grey roofing accents, that might look pretty.
I would Google the colors you like and see what other people have used, then I would go to the paint store and grab a Ton of samples and work through what you love and what you hate. Sorry this question got lost, I am sure what ever you do you can make a great choice.
My daughter wants loyal blue painted in her bedroom. It is a small room so I said 1 wall was ok. Which light blue or gray would be best for the other walls? We have white crown, doors, ceilings and blinds and a light tanish carpet. HELP!
Hi Melody! Will you send us your question and a pic over on Facebook? I bet our readers will have some great suggestions for you! https://www.facebook.com/remodelaholic
