Customizable: The beauty of DIY crafts lies in the ability to make them your own. With a yarn wreath like this, you can choose yarn colors, ribbon styles, and other embellishments that match your personal taste and home decor. We’ve got lots of ideas for you in this post to make a yarn wreath for whatever season and style you want.

How to Make a Pumpkin Yarn Wreath: Step-by-Step Tutorial
Supplies
- 14-inch wire wreath form (Dollar Tree)
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
- Green burlap ribbon for bow (Dollar Tree)
- Small scrap of burlap fabric (Dollar Tree, leftover from another project)
- Chunky loop yarn (I used Bernat EZ Loop Yarn in color: orange leaf, from Joann, with a coupon – I’ve linked additional similar options below)
Instructions
First, we’ll show you how to make a yarn wreath in just 2 easy steps! Then we’ll show you how to turn it into a charming pumpkin yarn wreath for your front door by adding a stem and a DIY burlap bow.
Step 1: Secure the Yarn
Begin by taking the end of the yarn and tying it around the outer wire of the wreath form. Ensure it’s tightly secured with a double knot or a dab of hot glue. This yarn will serve as the base for your loopy yarn wreath.
Step 2: Wrap the Yarn
Start wrapping the yarn around the entire wreath form. Make it tight, so the pumpkin has a fuller look with the rows very close to each other.
Continue wrapping until the entire wreath form is covered.
That’s it — your yarn wreath is complete! Follow the next steps to turn it into a pumpkin yarn wreath, or see our ideas below for other yarn wreath ideas for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and more.
HOw Much YARN DO I NEED?
The amount of yarn you’ll need will depend on the thickness of your yarn and the size of your wreath form. One skein of loop yarn (6.4 oz / 180 g) covered this 14-inch wire wreath form, but I could have used 2 and made it extra fluffy.
For a larger wreath form, you’ll need 2 skeins or more. Thinner yarn with less texture will also require more yarn to cover the wreath form, especially if you use a thicker foam wreath form.
Step 3: Add Burlap Pumpkin Stem
Take a section of burlap (approximately 5 inches by 4 inches), tri-fold it, and hot glue the folds together to secure them.
Now, apply some hot glue to the backside of the wreath and press the burlap piece firmly onto it. Be cautious, as the burlap may have holes through which hot glue can seep, potentially causing burns.
Step 4: Create a DIY Burlap Bow
Cut three pieces of ribbon: one 5 inches long and two 7 inches long. Fold the 5-inch section in half, with some overlapping, and do the same with one of the 7-inch sections. Use some spare string to tie the pieces in the center.
Cover the center section with a small piece of ribbon for a finished look. If you desire tails on the bow, fold the last piece of 7-inch ribbon in half, add it to the backside of the bow with glue, and cut the ends to create dovetails.
Step 5: Attach the Bow
Apply hot glue to the backside of the ribbon and press it firmly onto the front of the wreath, positioning it where you like.
Your Pumpkin Yarn Wreath is now complete! Hang it on your front door or inside your home to add a touch of fall warmth to your decor.
Variations to Spice Up Your Pumpkin Yarn Wreath
One of the great things about crafting is that you can make a project uniquely yours. Here are some variations to consider when making your Pumpkin Yarn Wreath:
1. Color Palette: While the classic orange yarn is perfect for a traditional fall look, you can experiment with different yarn colors to match your personal style or home decor. Consider shades like deep burgundy, rustic brown, or even a mix of fall colors for a unique twist.
2. Embellishments: Customize your wreath with additional decorations like artificial leaves, miniature pumpkins, or acorns. These extra elements can enhance the autumnal charm of your wreath.
3. Ribbon Styles: The burlap ribbon used in the basic tutorial provides a rustic touch, but you can choose different ribbon styles to change the overall look. Satin ribbons in rich, jewel tones can give your wreath an elegant feel, while plaid or gingham ribbons can add a bit of farmhouse charm.
4. Size Variation: Experiment with different wreath form sizes. You can create a smaller wreath for a cute accent piece or a larger one to make a bold statement on your front door.
5. Personalization: Add your own twist by incorporating your family name, a welcome message sign, or a monogram to the wreath. This personal touch will make your Pumpkin Yarn Wreath even more special.
These variations allow you to create a Pumpkin Yarn Wreath that perfectly suits your unique style and preferences.
More Ways to Make a Yarn Wreath
There are so many ways to make a yarn wreath! Here are just a few yarn wreath ideas we love:
Chunky loop yarn wreath
The fluffy texture of the blanket loop yarn makes a perfect cozy wreath for fall and winter, in any color of yarn you choose! Wrap the wreath form like we showed above and leave it as is, or use it as a base for other wreath ideas (see our list of more yarn wreath ideas below).
Regular chunky yarn wreath
Thick chenille yarn wrapped around a wreath base (2 layers to cover) looks great, too, or you can tie strands of thick yarn around a wire wreath form for a giant pom pom wreath style. Use a neutral color for a knitted sweater look, or bright colors for a more vibrant pop of color on your door or wall.
Traditional yarn wreath
Wrap a wreath form with different colors of traditional weight yarn to match the holiday, your home decor colors, or your favorite color. Use several colors of yarn or variegated yarn for a homespun look like this raffia wreath. Add some felt shapes like this argyle valentine wreath for a quick and easy craft.
Swap the wreath form
Use a foam wreath form or a straw wreath form instead of the wire wreath form. Just pin the yarn in place and start wrapping! Even a recycled cardboard ring can be wrapped with yarn for a quick and easy yarn wreath. (Bonus: Add some rolled up fabric, batting, or other filler below the yarn to give it extra volume.)
Woven yarn wreath
For a totally different look to your yarn wreath, use regular weight yarn or chunky yarn and weave it through a wire wreath frame like we did for this easy woven rope wreath. A homespun style thick jumbo yarn like this will look like a knitted sweater wreath!
Yarn Wreath Ideas
Love the simple DIY yarn wreath but want to make something other than a pumpkin? Try these other ideas using loopy yarn or thick chunky yarn in different colors for different effects.
Textured Yarn Wreath
Use loopy yarn in any color you like to make a soft textured wreath. Then add pom-poms, rosettes, flowers, a hand-painted wooden sign, or other traditional wreath accessories to make the wreath your own custom creations.
Winter Yarn Wreath
Wrap the wreath form in white loop yarn, then add add mini bottlebrush trees and a lightweight miniature cottage Christmas ornament (or printable paper house!) for a winter scene. You can also add Dollar Tree snowflakes like this, or make a snowman wreath like we did here.
Christmas Tree Yarn Wreath
Wrap the wreath form in a deep green chunky yarn or loop yarn, then attach small ornaments or stars for a Christmas tree inspired wreath. For extra holiday joy, add a string of battery operated star lights.
Valentine Yarn Wreath
Pink loopy yarn will look similar to our Curled Paper Wreath (and be much faster to make!) or add felt hearts like our Valentine Argyle Wreath.
Pom Pom Yarn Wreath
Use whatever yarn you like to make a bunch of pom-poms and glue or tie them to the wreath form. Make a rainbow pompom wreath, a white snowball pompom wreath, or any color you like. Here’s our trick to make a bunch of pom-poms quickly.
Yarn and Ribbon Wreath
Wrap the wreath with ribbon as well as yarn, or weave the ribbon into the rows of wrapped yarn. For the easiest version, just add a large ribbon bow to your yarn wreath!
Spring Yarn Wreath
For spring and easter, grab some light green fuzzy yarn — like eyelash yarn or furry yarn. Wrap a wreath form to make spring grass and add flowers, or little pompom puff ball Easter chicks.
Common Questions about Making a Yarn Wreath
Can I use a different type of yarn?
Yes, you can use any type of yarn you prefer. Just make sure it’s the color and texture you want for your wreath. As you can see in the examples above, many types of yarn are great for making an easy yarn wreath! Just take a stroll down the yarn aisle at your local craft store to see the many options available for purchase.
- Chunky loop yarn or boucle yarn for a fluffy yarn wreath
- Thick and chunky yarn (often in chenille) or tshirt yarn makes a cozy DIY yarn wreath that looks like a blanket
- Fleece sherpa yarn or jumbo blanket yarn will make a yarn wreath that looks almost like a knitted wool sweater
- Eyelash yarn (or furry yarn) will look fluffy and warm, or like spring grass, depending on what you add to the yarn wreath
What can I use if I don’t have burlap fabric for the pumpkin stem?
If you don’t have burlap fabric, you can substitute it with other fabrics like cotton or felt in colors that match your fall theme.
You can also use a scrap of wood (or a ruler/yardstick) or cut a section of a branch to form the stem — use zip ties to connect it directly to the wire frame to ensure it stays attached.
Can I make a smaller wreath with the same instructions?
Absolutely! You can use a smaller wreath form to create a petite version of the pumpkin yarn wreath, or use a larger wreath form and an extra skein of yarn for a larger yarn wreath of any variety.
How do I hang the wreath?
To hang your wreath, you can attach a loop of ribbon or twine to the back of the wreath to serve as a wreath hanger. Then hang it on a hook or nail.
Can I make this wreath with kids?
Yes! Older children will have fun customizing their own yarn wreath, since all they need to do is wrap the yarn around the frame. It takes patience but no real crafting skills.
The pumpkin yarn wreath is suitable for older children with adult supervision, as it involves the use of a hot glue gun. Make sure to handle the glue gun and monitor the process to ensure safety.
How do I keep the wrapped yarn from sagging to the bottom of the wreath form?
Gravity might tug the loops of yarn toward the lower end of the wreath. To help keep it in place, use floral wire or a matching pipe cleaner at a few points around the wreath to attach it directly to the wire frame.
The Pumpkin Yarn Wreath is a fantastic fall craft that allows you to create a beautiful decoration that embodies the essence of autumn.
