Why This DIY Christmas Swag is a Great Holiday Craft

The Dollar Tree White Christmas Swag is an excellent Christmas craft for several reasons. Firstly, it’s incredibly budget-friendly, utilizing affordable materials that can be easily sourced from your local Dollar Tree store. This makes it an accessible project for anyone, regardless of their crafting expertise or budget constraints.

Additionally, this DIY Christmas swag is versatile and can be customized to suit your personal style and color scheme. Whether you prefer traditional red and green or a more modern gold and silver theme or a colorful mid-century Christmas style, this DIY project can be adapted to match your unique holiday decor preferences.

A Christmas swag is also more flexible for decorating than a traditional Christmas wreath — it takes up less space on a wall/door/shelf, and can be hung vertically instead to decorate a chair or stair railing or hang from an outdoor light like we did with this fresh evergreen swag made from real yard trimmings.

Crafting during the holiday season is not just about creating beautiful decorations; it’s also a wonderful way to spend quality time with loved ones. Gather your family or friends, and turn this crafting session into a festive bonding experience during a cookie swap party or a Hallmark movie marathon.

DIY Christmas Swag Supplies

As always, you can work with what you can find at your local store! In addition to the mini tree base for the swag, you’ll need a large center bow, some color and texture for the front (we used berries of 3 kinds) and a larger greenery element for the back (we used pine picks).

DIY Christmas Swag Instructions

Step 1: Turn the Mini Trees into a Swag

Open up the boxes of the white Christmas trees and remove the bases. Discard the bases, as they won’t be needed for this project. Lay the trees so the ends overlap each other.

Secure the tree trunks together with a generous amount of hot glue and some twine or floral wire. Tie the twine tightly and leave some extra twine to loop and hang the swag.

Step 2: Add the Bow

Use the twist tie on the back of the bow to secure it to the center of where the trees meet, tying it back tightly.

Step 3: Add Berry Clusters

Use wire cutters or scissors to clip off sections of the gold berries. Add them to either side of the bow, tucking them under a bit and securing them with hot glue.

If the glitter is falling off your berry picks, paint them with a quick coat of matching spray paint before attaching them.

Step 4: Add Pine Picks

Lay the pine picks in an X shape and secure them to the *backside* of the trees with hot glue, allowing them to stick out a bit.

  • Swap the miniature white trees for the green miniature trees for a more traditional pine swag.
  • Consider incorporating additional elements and seasonal accents like miniature ornaments, festive ribbons, dried oranges, pinecones, or even LED lights for a twinkling effect.
  • Experiment with different color combinations in ribbons and accessories to match your unique holiday theme.
  • Change the shape by changing how you layer your mini Christmas trees. Make a teardrop swag by overlapping the two tree swag sections and the extra greenery elements in the same direction, with all the branches pointed down and out.

Common Questions about this Dollar Store DIY Christmas Swag

How do I hang a Christmas swag?

The twine or florist’s wire in the middle of the swag can be hung from a nail or hook, or from a wreath hanger. You can also hide the twine knot and add some additional flair by hanging the swag using a wide ribbon that matches the bow in the center.

To attach a swag to a horizontal or vertical post (like a stair railing), use a piece of floral wire or a zip tie around the center stem of the swag and the post.

Where can I hang a Christmas swag?

The oblong nature of a Christmas swag makes it ideal for decorating a table centerpiece, or hanging in an area where you need either a vertical or horizontal decoration (vs a round decoration like a wreath).

Hang a Christmas swag horizontally on or above a door, along a handrail or porch, on the side of a mailbox, or placed on a windowsill or bookshelf (add a battery candlestick for extra ambiance!).

Hang a Christmas swag vertically from a light or sconce, on a chair back, on staircase railings or posts, on porch pillars, or make mini swags to hang on kitchen cabinets.

What if I want to make a Christmas swag from real branches?

You certainly can! We show you here how to make a fresh Christmas swag in 4 simple steps using cedar, fir, mistletoe, holly, boxwood, cypress, junipers, or other evergreen branches gathered from your yard – or you can shop the local florists or grocery stores, or ask a Christmas tree lot for their leftover evergreens and trimmed branches.

Where can I find Dollar Tree Christmas trees and supplies?

Dollar Tree stores typically carry a variety of Christmas decorations and crafting supplies. Check with your local store or visit their website to find the nearest location. You can also order supplies online — many in quantities as few as 4 — which is a great option for crafting with a group.

Can I make this swag with a different color scheme?

Absolutely! Feel free to adapt the color palette to match your existing decor or personal preferences. Dollar Tree often carries a range of colors in their holiday decor section.

Can I use a different type of glue for this project?

While hot glue is recommended for its quick-drying and sturdy hold, you can experiment with other strong adhesives like E6000 or a strong craft glue. Keep in mind that drying times may vary.
