Best Blue Paint Colors
Unlike many other trendy colors that go in and out of style, blue has been in style for decades, and navy blue is a classic paint color choice for interiors and exteriors both. We used a dark blue paint in one of the bedrooms back in our very first remodel, and I’ve always loved how a great blue paint color can add color while also acting as a perfect neutral in my home color scheme.
When we decided we wanted to paint our interior doors, we knew it was going to be a lot of work to paint the doors well and correctly, so we wanted a color that wouldn’t be dated in another year. We chose Behr Dark Navy and, 3 years later, we still love it.
A dark blue paint color can work with many different shades of white and with many different wood tones, too. There’s a reason that Hale Navy is Benjamin Moore’s best-selling blue paint color! (See our Benjamin Moore Hale Navy paint color spotlight here.)
Navy paint colors are a great choice if you’re looking to add some drama to your home while also giving a calming vibe. These blue paint colors are hot on the market today to add dimension and depth to your home color palette, from blue walls to blue kitchen cabinets. If you want to try out navy blue in your own home without the commitment of paint, dark blue is also a popular choice for curtains, pillows, rugs, and home decor accessories.

Classic Navy Blue Paint Colors

Note: On some of the photos from our local home shows, we were unable to find the exact paint color so we used a paint color matching app to find a close match 🤞. These are noted as “lookalike paint colors” with an *asterisk in the caption.
Benjamin Moore Hale Navy
Hale Navy is a gorgeous and versatile deep navy blue and consistently one of our favorite navy paint colors. Hale Navy has gray undertones, giving it more of a muted tone and meaning it can really change colors depending on the lighting. This undertone also helps it coordinate well with other paint colors with gray undertones, making it that much easier to have a cohesive custom paint color palette.
One way to use a dark color like Hale Navy is to use it to tie lots of different elements together. In her living room (below), Gretchen painted the walls, base trim, crown molding, window trim, AND the fireplace all with Hale Navy which helps minimize the large fireplace like she wanted while making the whole room feel cohesive and cozy. This also has the benefit of de-emphasizing the non-centered fireplace and working to help camouflage the TV rather than highlight it.

The deep gray-blue of Hale Navy also makes for a beautiful statement when paired with white walls or other neutral decor. Lauren painted this cabinet for their home office and it is gorgeous – and the dark color helps show off the white decor inside, too.
Sherwin-Williams Naval Blue
If you’re looking for more of a true navy paint color that is less gray than Hale Navy, Sherwin Williams Naval might be the right shade for you. With a gray-green undertone, Naval is a perfect choice for a gorgeous navy blue paint color that will coordinate well with so many other colors for added versatility.
If a wall of dark navy blue cabinets feels too dark, Sherwin-Williams Naval is a great choice for a two-tone blue and white cabinet setup, and I love the gold hardware!
Farrow & Ball Hague Blue
For a slightly lighter navy paint color, turn to Farrow & Ball Hague Blue. This gorgeous European-inspired shade of indigo is a favorite color for versatility and classic style. (Its sister color Inchyra Blue is gorgeous, too!)
Hague Blue is beautiful on a wall to accent white furniture and decor, or to tie together walls and built-in shelving.
What Sheen Paint to Use Where
Paint sheen refers to luster: how shiny the finished painted surface looks. A paint’s sheen is related to its durability. There are 5 commonly used paint sheens that are used for different applications. Pick the sheen of your choice for your project:
- Flat or matte sheen is commonly used for ceilings or other uneven surfaces to hide imperfections on less-than-perfect surfaces. Flat paint can only withstand very gentle scrubbing with soap, so it’s best used in low-traffic areas where minimal washing is needed.
- A flat enamel paint has the look of a flat finish and is formulated to have a protective barrier at the surface, making it more durable than a plain flat paint while maintaining the look of a matte finish.
- Eggshell sheen is the middle of the sheen spectrum: mostly matte, low shine, and moderately durable. It can be used on walls and ceilings and is a great option for added durability while still minimizing imperfections — great for bedrooms, hallways, and living rooms. Most paint samples come in eggshell.
- Satin or pearl sheen is a low-gloss versatile luster, the most popular finish, and our Remodelaholic pick for most of our home. The slight glow looks great and makes for an easy-to-clean surface. Satin paint is food for a wide variety of surfaces and durable for high-traffic areas like kitchens, high-humidity environments like bathrooms, and kids’ rooms.
- Semi-gloss sheen is a mid-gloss with extra durability. Cabinets, doors, base moldings, window frames and trim are commonly painted with semi-gloss paint with beautiful results.
- Gloss or high-gloss sheen is shiny, beautiful, and durable — and will also show even slight imperfections and fingerprints. Gloss paint is typically used in high-end finishes for homes and commercial applications.
