Before & After: Beautiful 1980’s Renovation

We’ve run into a lot of challenges in our house-flips but one we never thought we’d find was too much space. This 1986-built home came with 3,800 sq feet, five bedrooms, and four bathrooms. Being that it was new, the house was in great shape — however, we were determined to bring this home into the current decade. The exterior didn’t need much more than a fresh coat of paint, but once we got started on the renovation, we truly underestimated how much we actually signed on for.

Entryway

What we loved before we even started was how grand the home felt. Walking in, you’re greeted by a massive entryway with a beautifully structured staircase and vaulted ceilings that are carried into the living room. We wanted to enhance all of it.Entryway Renovation, Fendall Home Renovation, Cobblestone Development Group featured on @Remodelaholic

We swapped out the original doors with the beautiful two paneled doors, which invited in loads of natural light to show off the herringbone floors, and bright walls. Adding paneling to the walls gave this entryway some drama and presence.1980's Tall Entryway Renovation, Fendall Home Renovation, Cobblestone Development Group featured on @Remodelaholic

The rest seemed to come easy. We ditched the old red runner carpet, painted the walls a bright white, and dropped in a gorgeous fixture we found at Shades of Light.

Great Room/Living Room

The great room is similar in structure to the original, but we took a lot of design liberties throughout. The fireplace truly turned into a statement piece. We bought the wood from a local reclaimed material warehouse who pulled it from an old barn in Roanoke, VA.Stone Fireplace Update to Wood Herringbone, Fendall Home Renovation, Cobblestone Development Group featured on @Remodelaholic
Replacing the faux-stone fireplace, and matching the wooden pattern to the entryway floors was one of our favorite design choices.

Though we appreciate creativity, we decided to take out the spiral staircase that was a signature of the original builder. We didn’t want to completely get rid of this piece, so now it’s in the garage for a future repurpose (and for the kids to play on).

Kitchen & Dining

The biggest change was the kitchen. We sealed off the ceiling where the spiral staircase was and gave it a beadboard treatment. It broke up a boring ceiling and gave the space some interest. It still had the 1986 builders-grade cabinets that were in desperate need of change- not to mention a half wall planter that came complete with dead plants.

The cabinets on the walls are finished with an antique white color and on the island with keystone. We double-stacked the cabinets to take advantage of the space and elongate it to match the grandeur of the other rooms. We can honestly say this is our best kitchen to date.

Master Suite

We transformed the rest of the downstairs into the master suite of our dreams. As you can see- it’s huge!

The attached lounge area that could be used as a sitting room or massive walk-in closet- looks out into the woodland that surrounds the home.

The double vanity we installed provides much more storage – in fact, the stack in the middle is strictly for makeup storage.

This renovation was rewarding in so many ways. When we were little, we remember visiting friends in this neighborhood thinking that only celebrities could live here because of the amount of space the homes had. We wanted to honor that nostalgia and took a lot of design risks, but we’re confident they paid off.

This dated 1980's renovation became a beautiful and classically modern home with some beautiful design choices, including a reclaimed wood facade fireplace and dark herringbone tile in the entryway. Details and more before and afters on Remodelaholic.com

  2. Where do you find that center cabinet stack in the bathroom without ordering all new cabinets? I don’t even know what it’s called (making it that much harder to find). I love that look!

  3. Where is that incredible tile in the front/foyer/vestibule from? Is that a laminate? Slate? Stained wood? Thanks!
