2022 Color of the Year Gray Green Paint Palette
Each year, every major paint manufacturer releases a “color of the year”. Sherwin-Williams, Behr, Benjamin Moore, Farrow & Ball, and the crazy-for-color folks at Pantone, for starters.
This color of the year (or color palette of the year) is a prediction of which color, tone, and shade will be on the rise that year. Often it’s representative of what people are seeking in their homes/lives (calm, energy, excitement, etc).
Some years the color experts’ picks are spread all over the color wheel (like in 2021), but more recently, there tends to be a common color undertone that trends for these “color of the year” paint picks.

For this year, the trending color is GREEN.
In the last decade we’ve seen several trends in green paint colors, including lime green, mint green, light green, kelly green, emerald green, and jewel jade green.
Currently, the green colors for homes are trending toward more muted neutral gray green paint colors, in the olive and sage green families, and moody dark greens, bordering gray and black.
The earthy mid-tone gray green paint colors we’re sharing here are excellent modern neutral paint colors and many are great candidates for whole home paint colors — say goodbye to beige!
Gray Green Paint Colors of The Year
In a year where many are looking to relax and create a soothing home environment, 7 of the major paint lines chose a gray green color as their color of the year! Whether you’re looking for a grey green paint color or more of a greenish-gray paint, you’ll find it in this palette.
Better Homes & Gardens has joined the paint color of the year crowd this year with their sage green paint color pick, Laurel Leaf.
Benjamin Moore’s color of the year, October Mist, is a gentle sage to “anchor and uplift.”
Even Minwax has picked a wood stain color of the year that has green undertones! Their Gentle Olive wood stain is a subtle grey sage green.

What is Light Reflective Value (LRV)?
LRV is a value (0-100) commonly used by design professionals to represent what percentage of the light a surface reflects. LRV 0 is absolute black and LRV 100 is pure white. A lower LRV will give a darker, moodier vibe, where a higher LRV will be more light and airy.
Knowing the LRV of a paint color can help you decide if it is right for your room, lighting situation and mood. The LRV can be helpful in comparing similar paint colors, too, so we include this value for each paint color when available.
Since these greens all lean toward gray or have gray undertones, they’ll also pair well with your favorite modern greige paint color, too. (Your existing creamy whites or pure white trim will be OK, too.)
HOW TO TEST A PAINT COLOR
When you’ve chosen the perfect color (or several) — be sure to test it out before splurging for the gallon of paint!
- Get a sample tester or, even easier, a peel and stick paint sample swatch!
- Use an online paint color visualizer or paint color mobile app to test the paint color using a photo of your room.
